For 26 years I have been working as a driver to bring goods and livelihoods to the poor. We have many requests for help every day. People ask for medicines and food to eat. In recent months the requests have increased: 500,000 jobs have been lost due to the virus and people are hungry.
They called me from a clinic asking for help for a woman last night. She was an alone- hungry woman who lives in a house where there is no gas and that is why she cannot cook anything hot. We brought her some pasta, rice, buckwheat, a bottle of oil and a packet of biscuits. She had not eaten for a couple of days and she immediately devoured the cookies.
A few days ago I went to visit another elderly woman, she also lives alone and in a difficult situation; she had not washed for 8 years…
In recent years I have seen so many people and situations, but I had never seen so much poverty.
Doing this job is really difficult sometimes, especially in this last period, in which the healthcare and economic situation has worsened.
I lack the strength to face all this sometimes and I get angry: from one part of the world I see people who have everything and here instead I find people hungry every day. Then I remember that they are also children of God and they are ours and my brothers and I cannot abandon them.
